Talc Procurement Guide

Talc Powder Grades, Specifications and Prices: 2026 Buyer's Guide

Talc is sold by grade, not by name. Particle size, whiteness, purity and asbestos testing decide which talc fits cosmetics, pharma, plastics, paint, paper or ceramics. This guide covers each grade, a mesh to micron chart, the specification sheet buyers should demand, 2026 compliance changes, price drivers and a quotation checklist.

Quick answer: Talc is a soft magnesium silicate, Mg3Si4O10(OH)2, sold in grades defined by particle size, whiteness, purity and testing. Industrial grades for plastics, paint, paper and ceramics are the volume market. Cosmetic, pharmaceutical and food grades carry tighter limits on heavy metals, microbes and asbestos. The average US milled talc price was about US$330 per tonne in 2025. Fine, high-white and certified grades sell well above that figure.

What is talc powder?

Talc is a hydrated magnesium silicate and the softest mineral on the Mohs scale, at 1. Pure talc contains 31.7% MgO, 63.5% SiO2 and 4.8% water by weight. The crystals form thin plates, which give talc its slip, its barrier effect in plastics and coatings, and its oil-absorbing feel in cosmetics. Talc is chemically inert, water-repellent and stable at high temperatures.

No talc deposit is pure. Ores carry chlorite, dolomite, magnesite or other minerals in different amounts. These associated minerals change whiteness, hardness, chemistry and price, so the deposit and the mill decide the grade as much as the grinding does.

Platy structurePlates stiffen plastics, block moisture in coatings and help paper coatings lie flat.
SoftnessMohs 1 means low wear on extruders, mills and dies.
Hydrophobic surfaceTalc repels water and absorbs oil, useful in cosmetics, rubber and pitch control.
Inert chemistryTalc does not react with most resins, binders or active ingredients.
Heat stabilityTalc keeps its structure through compounding, firing and curing temperatures.
WhitenessHigh-white deposits command a premium for cosmetics, paper and light-coloured plastics.

Talc powder grades by application

Every talc grade is built for a use. The table shows where each grade goes and what the buyer controls. Typical figures are common buyer targets, not universal standards. Your own trials and regulations set the final limits.

Industrial and cosmetic talc are different products

A plastics grade with 88% whiteness and no microbial test is a sound industrial product. Sold into a cosmetic formula, the same powder becomes a compliance risk. Name the end use in every enquiry so the supplier quotes the right grade and documents.

Talc mesh to micron conversion chart

Suppliers quote talc in mesh, in microns or as a D50 or D97 value. Mesh counts the openings per linear inch of a sieve. Higher mesh means finer powder. Use this chart to compare offers written in different units.

MeshOpening (microns)Typical talc use
100150Coarse filler, rubber dusting
20075Ceramics, roofing, general industrial
32545Standard ground talc for paint, rubber, plastics
40038Finer paint and plastics grades
600about 23Fine fillers, paper
800about 18Fine plastics and coatings
1250about 10Micronized cosmetic and performance plastics grades
2500about 5Ultrafine grades, film, nucleation

100 to 400 mesh follow ASTM E11 sieve openings. Above 400 mesh, the micron values follow common trade convention, because standard sieves stop near 20 µm and laser diffraction takes over.

"1250 mesh" is not a measurement

Fine talc is sized by laser diffraction, not sieves. Two suppliers both calling a grade "1250 mesh" can deliver very different D50 and D97 values. Ask for the full particle size distribution, the instrument and the method on the certificate of analysis.

Talc specification sheet: what to ask for

A complete talc specification names each parameter, a limit and a test method. Use the list below to check any supplier data sheet or certificate of analysis.

Asbestos testing and 2026 compliance

Talc and asbestos minerals sometimes form in the same geological settings. A lot from the wrong part of a deposit can carry trace asbestos fibres. For cosmetic, pharmaceutical and food buyers, asbestos data is the first document to check, not the last.

Regulator or bodyPositionDate
IARC (WHO)Classified talc as "probably carcinogenic to humans" (Group 2A). The evaluation covered talc without asbestos.July 2024
US FDAProposed mandatory asbestos testing for talc in cosmetics under MoCRA, then withdrew the proposal after public comment. FDA still has to issue a new rule under MoCRA section 3505.Proposed Dec 2024, withdrawn 28 Nov 2025
USPRevised Talc monograph with new chapter <901> Detection of Asbestos in Pharmaceutical Talc, using XRD and PLM.Official 1 June 2026
EU (ECHA RAC)Recommended classifying talc as a Category 1B carcinogen (H350) and STOT RE 1 (H372). The European Commission decides whether to adopt.RAC opinion 2025
Great Britain (HSE)Did not classify talc as a carcinogen. Agreed on lung toxicity from repeated inhalation.Reported Jan 2026

How asbestos testing works

  • XRD (X-ray diffraction) screens the mineral make-up of the powder. Fast, but limited at very low fibre levels.
  • PLM (polarized light microscopy) identifies fibres by optical properties. Required with XRD under USP <901>.
  • TEM (transmission electron microscopy) finds the smallest fibres. The most sensitive method and the most expensive.
Ask which method stands behind "asbestos-free"

An "asbestos-free" statement without a method, a detection limit, a laboratory name and a lot number carries little weight. For cosmetic or pharma talc, ask for a lot-linked report using XRD plus PLM at minimum, and TEM where your market or customer expects it.

Talc prices: what drives the cost per tonne

Talc has no exchange-traded benchmark. Prices are set lot by lot between buyer and seller. The best public reference is the USGS average milled talc price in the United States.

Six factors that move a talc quotation

FinenessEach step from 325 mesh to micronized adds milling and classification cost. Ultrafine grades cost the most to produce.
Whiteness and purityHigh-white, high-talc deposits are scarce and priced higher.
Certification and testingCosmetic and pharma grades carry asbestos, heavy metal and microbial testing on each lot.
Surface treatmentCoated talc for plastics adds a processing step and treatment chemicals.
Packing25 kg bags, 1 tonne jumbo bags or bulk change handling and freight cost per tonne.
Freight and routeTalc is a low-value, heavy bulk product. Freight often equals a large share of the delivered price.
Compare offers on landed costLanded cost per tonne = FOB price + freight + insurance + duty + port and inland charges

Example: a US$260 FOB offer with US$95 freight lands at US$355 plus local costs. A US$300 CFR offer from a nearer port lands cheaper before duty. Always convert quotes to the same Incoterm and destination.

Talc import duty is often zero

Natural talc (HS 2526.10 not crushed, HS 2526.20 crushed or powdered) enters the United States duty-free. Check your own country's tariff for HS 2526 before you compare origins.

Source: USGS Mineral Commodity Summaries 2026. Thousand tonnes. Some countries report steatite or unspecified talc minerals.

  • Plastics lead demand. In the US, plastics took 36% of talc in 2025, paint 19%, ceramics 17%, paper 12%, roofing 8% and rubber 2%.
  • Pakistan and China supply most US imports. In 2025, Pakistan supplied about 49% of US talc imports, China about 27% and Canada 20%. Much Pakistani talc is mined in Afghanistan and milled in Pakistan.
  • Traditional uses are shrinking. Water-based paints, lower-talc ceramic bodies and chemical pitch control have cut talc use in paint, ceramics and paper.
  • Compliance is reshaping cosmetic demand. IARC's 2024 classification, the EU classification process and litigation risk push cosmetic buyers toward fully documented, lot-tested talc.

How to buy talc powder: step by step

  1. Name the end use. Cosmetic, pharma, food, plastics, paint, paper, ceramics or rubber. The use decides the grade and documents.
  2. Set the specification. Particle size with method, whiteness with method, chemistry, moisture and any regulatory limits.
  3. Request a sample and lot CoA. Test the sample in your own process. A data sheet alone does not prove fit.
  4. Check asbestos and safety data. Lot-linked asbestos report, SDS and, for the EU, REACH status.
  5. Agree packing and Incoterm. Bags or jumbo bags, pallets, shrink wrap, FOB, CFR or CIF, named ports.
  6. Agree inspection. Pre-shipment sampling by an independent inspector and a named controlling laboratory.
  7. Start with a trial container. Confirm consistency before you commit to monthly volume.
  8. Lock change control. The supplier must notify you before any change of deposit, mill or treatment.

Frequently asked questions

What is the price of talc powder per tonne?

Talc has no exchange benchmark. The average US milled talc price was about US$330 per tonne in 2025, according to USGS. Coarse industrial grades sell below that average. Micronized, high-white, cosmetic and pharmaceutical grades sell well above. Freight is a large share of the delivered price, so compare offers on landed cost.

What are the main grades of talc?

The main grades are cosmetic, pharmaceutical, food, plastics, paint and coatings, paper, ceramics, rubber and agricultural talc. Each grade differs in particle size, whiteness, purity, chemistry and testing.

What is the difference between cosmetic and industrial talc?

Cosmetic talc is micronized, high-white and tested on each lot for asbestos, heavy metals and microbes. Industrial talc is specified for performance in plastics, paint, paper, ceramics or rubber and does not need cosmetic testing.

What does 325 mesh talc mean?

325 mesh refers to a sieve with 45 micron openings. A 325 mesh talc passes mostly through that sieve, with a stated residue limit. Finer grades are sized by laser diffraction and quoted as D50 and D97 values.

How do I know talc is asbestos-free?

Ask for a lot-linked test report naming the method, detection limit and laboratory. XRD plus PLM is the minimum under the revised USP talc monograph. TEM is the most sensitive method.

Is talc classified as a carcinogen?

IARC classified talc as probably carcinogenic to humans (Group 2A) in July 2024. In the EU, ECHA's risk committee recommended a Category 1B carcinogen classification in 2025, with the European Commission still to decide. Great Britain's HSE did not classify talc as a carcinogen.

Which countries produce the most talc?

India and China lead world production, with about 1.5 and 1.3 million tonnes in 2025. Brazil, the United States, Korea, France, South Africa and Turkey follow.

What is the HS code for talc?

Natural talc falls under HS 2526. HS 2526.10 covers talc that is not crushed or powdered, and HS 2526.20 covers crushed or powdered talc. Both enter the United States duty-free.

How much talc fits in a 20ft container?

A 20ft container usually holds about 18 to 25 tonnes of bagged talc, depending on bulk density, bag type and pallet use.
